UNDERSTANDING THE ALGORITHM

Autumn 2020

This project was intended to shed light on social media algorithms that can oftentimes polarize thoughts and beliefs due to the limited perspectives represented in users feeds. Moreover, this project sought to help people analyze and reduce their time spent on social media apps. Here is how we used the Design Thinking process to come up with a solution to this problem:

IDEATE

At the beginning of this phase, we emphasized quantity over quality to generate innovative, out-of-the-box ideas. Following idea generation, we choose the best ideas based on our project cost and time constraints.

PROTOTYPE

After ideating, we moved on to the prototype phase. Each member developed a low fidelity app prototype, including desirable features outlined in the ideate phase. After sharing our prototype ideas with one another and offering feedback, we developed a higher quality prototype that built off of all our initial designs. Below are the images of our final prototype.

EMPATHIZE AND DEFINE

We conducted empathy interviews and distributed a multiple choice survey to empathize with users and understand their pain points. The information from this step was then synthesized to define a specific problem statement.
